Unit 2-Operational Aspects of the Film Industry
In Unit 1 we discussed musical elements that produce tension, relaxation and the 11 functions of film scoring. Unit 2 discusses more of the business side of the film scoring - primarily the Operational Aspects of the Film Music Industry. While there are many aspects to consider such as:
Producers and Director
Editing the Film The Temp Track Spotting the Film Budgets Orchestrators Music Copyists Music Librarians |
Music Contractors
Studio Musicians Music Supervisors Film Music Agents Film Music Publicist Film Composer Developing the Concept for the Score |
We will focus on 3 from the list: Orchestrators, Film Composer and Developing the Concept for the Score
What do Orchestrators Do?
- Takes the composer's sketches (usually on a six to twelve stave page-and quite often even less) and assigns the melody line and harmonic accompaniment to the instruments of the orchestra (i.e. violins, flutes, oboes, trumpets, etc.)
- The composer's sketch is the shorthand version of the full score that the orchestrator will generate from the notes given from the composer. (Pictured is Hugo Friedhofer 1902-1981; Orchestrator for Max Steiner, Erik Korngold, Alfred Newman; Composed over 80 film scores)
- Compare the fully orchestrated score below to that of the composer's sketch on page 21 of the text.
