- Started as a drummer during his high school years
- Graduate of Berklee College of Music as a guitarist
- Got is break in film in 1976 with The Amazing Dobermans (knew nothing about composing music to film and taught himself by reading a book)
- Teamed up with Robert Zemickis to score Back to the Future in 1985 which launched his career
- Also scored: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988), The Abyss (1989), the other Back to the Future films, both Father of the Bride movies, The Bodyguard (1992), Forrest Gump (1994), Contact (1997), The Polar Express, A Christmas Carol (2009), The A-Team (2010), Captain America (2011) The Avengers (2012)
- Silvestri writes heavily in the leitmotif style
- Improvises when composing to achieve exceptional memorable themes and a strong sense of rhythm
